Brazilian Wheat Planted Area Below Expectations

Wheat planting in the Brazilian state of Paraná is progressing more slowly than expected due to poor weather. According to the Department of Rural Economics, farmers have only planted seven percent of their intended wheat acreage for the season. Paraná is Brazil’s largest wheat producing state with an expected 52 percent of the 2018 Brazilian wheat harvest. The other large wheat producing states such as Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo have not started planting due to dry conditions, keeping the focus on Paraná production. In 2018, Brazil is forecast to produce 4.9 million tonnes of wheat, 15 percent more than last year’s production which was hit hard by frosts and wet weather during key reproductive crop growth stages.
