Wine production across Europe fell in 2017 due to both harsh frosts and drought, according to a recent report from the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). Global output dropped by 8.2 percent, from 268.7 million hectoliters to 246.7 million hectoliters, with production in the European Union (EU) falling almost 15 percent to 141 million hectoliters.

Italy, France, and Spain were hit hard by the poor weather, with all three countries seeing production drop between 2016 and 2017. Italian production fell 17 percent to 42.5 million hectoliters, while France saw a 19 percent decrease to 36.7 million hectoliters. Spanish production fell to 32.1 million hectoliters, a 20 percent decline since 2016. Despite decreased European production, output in the United States (US), China, and much of Latin America remained unchanged or increased.

Decreased wine output in Europe could have global implications, and Gro Intelligence can help subscribers better analyze market data in the face of rapidly changing climatic events.
