Note: Gro shows that Romania's winter wheat yielded 3.94 t/ha in 2016.
Sales of fungicides—a rough proxy for application—grew in Romania by nearly 14% between 2011 and 2015. Research suggests that European wheat yields are responding positively to new fungicide chemistries. Romanian wheat is no exception, with winter wheat yield reaching a 10-year high in 2016. Still, the country’s average yield was roughly 25% below that of neighboring Hungary. Crop protection chemicals alone can only drive agricultural intensification so far. As such, the country will likely require further investment in machinery, irrigation, and other advancements to achieve its full potential.
