US retail prices for iceberg lettuce are $1.18/head, off their recent highs, but still above the 5-year average for this time of year.  Iceberg lettuce prices are expected to remain elevated as the northern California season winds down and hot, dry conditions persist.  While lettuce is grown year-round in the US, Salinas and Watsonville dominate from April to the end of October, before the Arizona season starts to ship in November.  Variations in supply, much more so than demand, drive fluctuations in produce prices.

Gro’s data on US retail prices enables users to track prices for a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. For example, this chart shows US retail prices for a variety of lettuces, most of which are grown in the Salinas Valley from summer through early fall. Gro also has wholesale produce prices based on point of origin (click here for Salinas-Watsonville shipping-point prices).

Many parts of California have been parched due to drought and a heat wave, with high temperatures expected to hit the region once again.  The vegetation remains dry and flammable, as indicated by the Gro Drought Index. Forecasts call for continued dry conditions into October.
