Founder and CEO

Sara Menker is the founder and CEO of Gro Intelligence, a data company dedicated to building products that change the way the world understands agriculture.

Prior to founding Gro, Sara was a Vice President in Morgan Stanley’s commodities group. She began her career in commodities risk management, where she covered all commodity markets, and subsequently moved to trading, where she managed an options trading portfolio.

Sara is a Trustee of the Mandela Institute For Development Studies (MINDS) and a Trustee of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). Sara was named a Global Young Leader by the World Economic Forum and is a fellow of the African Leadership Initiative of the Aspen Institute.

Sara received a B.A. in Economics and African Studies at Mount Holyoke College and the London School of Economics and an M.B.A. from Columbia University.

Prior to joining Gro Intelligence, Sewit was a Vice President at Helios Investment Partners, an Africa-focused private investment fund with more than $1.7bn in capital under management. She joined Helios after working with IPS, an investment arm of the Aga Khan Development Network focused on food and agro processing as well as infrastructure development. Before moving to Nairobi, Sewit was a VP at Citigroup’s Investment Banking Division in NY where she worked in the leveraged finance and global portfolio management teams.

Sewit holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from University of Connecticut and an M.B.A. from Columbia University.

Nemo Semret
Co-Founder and CTO

Nemo joined Gro after 8+ years at Google where he first worked for several years on web search ranking algorithms. He was then Tech Lead on Google’s Ad Exchange, leading the engineering team responsible for auction algorithms and mathematical optimization. Most recently, he was Tech Lead for Contributor by Google, a new product that he invented and led from a “20%” research project to a full product launch. Contributor enables market-based micropayment for content, letting users pay instead of seeing ads, thus creating a potential post-ads business model for the web.

Previously, Nemo was co-founder of Invisible Hand Networks, Inc. a startup providing real-time auction-based bandwidth exchanges for content providers and ISPs, which grew out of his academic research on game theoretic mechanisms in communication networks.  He  was also co-founder of a VOIP startup, and Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University.

Nemo is the author of dozens of highly cited research publications, and inventor on 7 US patents.  He obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, where his dissertation won the Eliahu I. Jury award.  He also holds a Masters in engineering from McGill, where he specialized in control theory applied to biomechanical robots, and a B. Eng (Honours) in Honours Electrical Engineering and Math, also from McGill, having graduated with distinction and a university scholar award.

Before joining Gro, Steve worked as a portfolio manager and the head of commodities research at Tudor Investment Corporation. During his tenure there, he developed extensive commodities analysis software and conducted practical study of agriculture, energy, and metals.  He is a crop scout with the Pro Farmer Crop Tour each summer, and teaches agricultural hedging at the University of Memphis.  Prior to finance, Steve commanded a tank company in the U.S. Army.

Steve holds a B.S. in Operations Research from USMA (West Point) and an M.B.A. in Statistics from the Stern School of Business at NYU. He’s currently about halfway through an M.S. degree in Agronomy from Iowa State University.  He’s also a holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

His professional involvement spans the globe, ranging multiple industries, including: Fortune 500, healthcare, education, consulting, and the public sector.  Jonathan joins Gro with the mission to increase awareness and understanding about Gro’s technologies. He intends to continue to expand the Gro name and clientele across the globe. 

Jonathan holds a B.A. in Business and Management Information Systems from Westminster College.

Horace joined Gro Intelligence in 2016 after working as an Actuarial Analyst and Software Developer at Actuarial Services (E.A). Ltd. There, he participated in actuarial consulting assignments for various clients and  helped design and build software systems for use in actuarial analysis and investment fund management.

Horace holds a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science and is working on completing a Master of Science in Computational Intelligence, both from the University of Nairobi.

Simon joined Gro Intelligence after graduating from Swarthmore College with a B.A. in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics.

He previously interned with Google, where he helped develop audio-processing software. He also did research in computer vision and mapping at the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute.

Yiqing was a Postdoc Fellow at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at University of Minnesota prior to joining Gro Intelligence. Her research interests lie in applied algebraic topology, which has major applications in data science, and engineering topics such as wireless sensor networks.

Yiqing holds a B.S. in Mathematics from University of Science and Technology of China, and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Computational Science from University of Pennsylvania.

Aymn joined Gro Intelligence after working as a researcher in the Civil Engineering Department at Colorado State University since 1998. His research at CSU focused on regional-scale hydrological modeling, developing GIS/Remote Sensing based applications, and providing geospatial analysis tools to assist in earth surface monitoring. Aymn’s work can be found in several peer-reviewed publications, including the Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering and the Journal of Hydrological Processes.

Aymn has a Ph.D in Civil and Environmental Engineering, an M.S. in Forestry Sc, GIS and remote sensing, and an M.Sc in Groundwater Hydrology from Colorado State University.

Muzi joined Gro Intelligence after working as a front-end developer at Yodle, a company that provides online marketing solutions to local businesses. She joined Yodle after graduating from Columbia University with an M.S. in computer science, where her concentration was in vision and graphics.

Muzi holds a B.S. in Digital Media Technology from Hunan University in China and an M.S. in Computer Science from Columbia University.

Justin joined Gro Intelligence after completing a one-year solo circumnavigation of the world without flying.  Justin worked at the Harvard Business School National Bureau of Economic Research as a researcher for three years prior to embarking on his adventure. He also worked with Adwene Learning Company in Accra, Ghana as a Business Development and Operations Manager.

Justin holds an B.A. in History from Harvard.

Nitzan is an experienced professional in the food and agricultural spaces. Before joining Gro Intelligence, Nitzan was a business development Manager at Adama, a ChemChina subsidiary, where she led the company’s Agtech initiative, focusing on big data and innovative sensors technologies. Prior to that, she was an officer in the IDF Intelligence Corps and managed the integration of advanced technologies into the unit’s visual intelligence methodology.

Nitzan holds an M.B.A. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an L.L.B. (Magna Cum Laude) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Jerrod joined Gro Intelligence after nearly three years at the International Research Institute for Climate and Society at Columbia University’s Earth Institute. There, he was a NASA DEVELOP fellow, center lead, and communications manager. With the NASA DEVELOP program, Jerrod created a drought severity index for Uruguay, researched flood and vector-borne disease monitoring in East Africa, and investigated remotely sensed fire monitoring in Indonesia. At the International Research Institute for Climate and Society, Jerrod also worked on improving remotely sensed drought monitoring and crop detection in Uruguay. Earlier in his career, Jerrod was a geologist with AMEC, where he worked on various environmental projects across California.

Jerrod holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Geology, both from California State University, Fresno.

Musen is a multi-disciplinary designer who strives to combine UI/UX design with creative technologies to evoke different physical and virtual experiences, while focusing on innovation and practical business solutions.

Prior to joining Gro Intelligence, he worked as an UI/UX designer for different types of clients for two years in Miami and New York.

Musen holds a M.F.A. in Design and Technology from Parsons the New School for Design and a B.A. in Industrial Design from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Research Analyst

Prior to joining Gro Intelligence, Laura was working as a graduate research assistant at the Silicon Laboratory, University of Bonn, involved in characterizing a particle detector system to measure background radiation for the Belle II experiment in Japan. She worked with the ATLAS pixel detector, designed for the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator -  the LHC in Switzerland - adapting it to suit the needs of the high luminosity experiment at Belle II. She previously interned at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in Germany joining the Astroparticle Physics group as a data analyst.

Laura holds a BSc. in Physics from the University of Nairobi and an MSc. in Physics from the University of Bonn.

James joined Gro Intelligence after working at Echo Mobile, a tech startup in Nairobi where he was one of the first engineers and was involved in building mobile data collection tools that are used by organizations such as UNICEF and The World Bank. While at Echo, he was one of the primary engineers involved in building a tool to gauge the child-friendliness of public primary schools in Kenya in partnership with UNICEF and the Ministry of Education. He has also worked with the Kenya AIDS Control Project where he developed data management systems.

He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Before joining Gro Intelligence, Stephan worked as a Research Associate at The Rockefeller University in New York where he developed a range of software solutions to investigate the processes of learning in the animal's brain. His work involved creating tools to gather, analyze and visualize image and sensor data. Prior to Rockefeller University, Stephan did his Ph.D. research in the field of optical engineering and the design of novel microscopy techniques to probe the neuronal activity of living animals.

Stephan holds a B.Sc. in Medical Microbiology from Leeds University, UK and a Ph.D in Systems Neuroscience from the Max-Planck Institute for Medical Research, Heidelberg, Germany.

Evans joined Gro Intelligence after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) with a B.S.E. in Chemical Engineering and Economics and a minor in Chemistry.

While at Penn, Evans interned with the Government of Botswana’s Poverty Eradication Program. While there, he analyzed the ex post impact of poverty eradication projects, researched a working definition for the middle class of Botswana, and estimated the impact of tax incentives on charitable giving.

Nombuyiselo Murage joined Gro Intelligence as a software engineering intern.She is a Geomatic Engineer by profession and recently training as a software developer. She previously worked as a Surveyor and GIS analyst at Geomatic CES, an engineering-survey firm where she was involved in several construction projects. She is a recent graduate fellow for the YALI East Africa RLC-Cohort 17.

Prior to joining Gro Intelligence, Stefan interned at the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) in Geneva, Switzerland, where he researched and analyzed fiscal policy and trade data in Sub-Saharan Africa. Throughout college, Stefan also worked as a research fellow and assistant for several professors, in fields ranging from economics to anthropology. Stefan has also spent numerous summers teaching English, math, and finance in both Morocco and Kenya.

Stefan majored in both International Relations and African Studies as an undergraduate at Colgate University.

Jacky joined Gro Intelligence in September 2013 after working for five years as a Project assistant at the Tourism Trust Fund, Nairobi - an organization that funded sustainable tourism projects. She was involved in coordinating logistics for both office and field operations. Prior to that, she worked at the Nairobi Hospital as a Senior Secretary.  

She holds a diploma in Business Administration and Secretarial studies from Strathmore University as well as an ABMA higher diploma in Community Development.

During her time at Bridgewater, she helped clients better understand their portfolios as well as increased the fund's understanding of Chinese government priorities and its effects on the economy. Prior to Bridgewater, she consulted companies interested in investing in China and other emerging markets. In her spare time, Tiffany eats and writes about food.

Before moving to East Africa, Hannah developed and led the data analytics division of a boutique TV advertising agency in Chicago. 

Hannah graduated from Northwestern University with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and a minor in African Studies.

Before joining Gro, Alassane was a co-founder and CTO of a geospatial company located in Colorado and serving land resource managers in agriculture, forestry, oil & gas and the environment. 

He had worked with Resource21, a startup company from Boeing, to develop actionable products (in map form) from a constellation of satellites to meet its precision agriculture and commodity clientele.  He also worked for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada on issues including climate change impact on crop growth and yield and crop attributes extraction using radar data.

Alassane holds a Ph.D. and an MSc. in remote sensing from Laval University (Quebec, Canada) and an MSc. in Physics from Abidjan University (Cote d’Ivoire).

She has also been an adjunct professor for The Women's College at the University of Denver. 

Kristina holds a B.S. in Natural Resource Management from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.S. in GIS and a PhD from the University of Denver.

At Cornerstone, she worked with academic and industry experts to provide economic and financial analyses in the context of commercial litigation. She has worked on issues related to financial regulation, private equity, and structured finance.

Prior to that, she was an officer in the IDF Intelligence Corps and managed the integration of advanced technologies into the unit’s visual intelligence methodology.

Jerrod joined Gro Intelligence after nearly three years at the International Research Institute for Climate and Society at Columbia University’s Earth Institute. There, he was a NASA DEVELOP fellow, center lead, and communications manager. With the NASA DEVELOP program, Jerrod created a drought severity index for Uruguay, researched flood and vector-borne disease monitoring in East Africa, and investigated remotely sensed fire monitoring in Indonesia. At the International Research Institute for Climate and Society, Jerrod also worked on improving remotely sensed drought monitoring and crop detection in Uruguay. Earlier in his career, Jerrod was a geologist with AMEC, where he worked on various environmental projects across California.

Jerrod holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Geology, both from California State University, Fresno.

Prior to joining Gro Intelligence, Laura was working as a graduate research assistant at the Silicon Laboratory, University of Bonn, involved in characterizing a particle detector system to measure background radiation for the Belle II experiment in Japan. She worked with the ATLAS pixel detector, designed for the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator -  the LHC in Switzerland - adapting it to suit the needs of the high luminosity experiment at Belle II. She previously interned at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in Germany joining the Astroparticle Physics group as a data analyst.

James joined Gro Intelligence after working at Echo Mobile, a tech startup in Nairobi where he was one of the first engineers and was involved in building mobile data collection tools that are used by organizations such as UNICEF and The World Bank. While at Echo, he was one of the primary engineers involved in building a tool to gauge the child-friendliness of public primary schools in Kenya in partnership with UNICEF and the Ministry of Education. He has also worked with the Kenya AIDS Control Project where he developed data management systems.

Prior to Rockefeller University, Stephan did his Ph.D. research in the field of optical engineering and the design of novel microscopy techniques to probe the neuronal activity of living animals.

He had worked with Resource21, a startup company from Boeing, to develop actionable products (in map form) from a constellation of satellites to meet its precision agriculture and commodity clientele.  He also worked for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada on issues including climate change impact on crop growth and yield and crop attributes extraction using radar data.

Alassane holds a Ph.D. and an MSc. in remote sensing from Laval University (Quebec, Canada) and an MSc. in Physics from Abidjan University (Cote d’Ivoire).

WE, AND OUR DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, SUPPLIERS, PARTNERS AND CONTENT PROVIDERS DO NOT WARRANT THAT: (I) THE SERVICES WILL BE SECURE OR AVAILABLE AT ANY PARTICULAR TIME OR LOCATION; (II) ANY DEFECTS OR ERRORS WILL BE CORRECTED; (III) ANY CONTENT AVAILABLE AT OR THROUGH THE SERVICES IS FREE OF VIRUSES OR OTHER HARMFUL COMPONENTS; OR (IV) THE RESULTS OF USING THE SERVICES WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS.

7. Limitation of Liability. IN NO EVENT SHALL WE, NOR OUR DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, PARTNERS, SUPPLIERS OR CONTENT PROVIDERS, BE LIABLE UNDER CONTRACT, TORT, STRICT LIABILITY, NEGLIGENCE OR ANY OTHER LEGAL OR EQUITABLE THEORY WITH RESPECT TO THE SERVICES FOR ANY (I) LOST PROFITS, DATA LOSS, COST OF PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES, OR SPECIAL, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE, COMPENSATORY OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER, SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES (HOWEVER ARISING), (II) BUGS, VIRUSES, TROJAN HORSES, OR THE LIKE (REGARDLESS OF THE SOURCE OF ORIGINATION), OR (III) DIRECT DAMAGES IN EXCESS OF $50.00.

8. Governing Law and Jurisdiction. These Terms of Service shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, including its conflicts of law rules, and the United States of America. You agree that any dispute arising from or relating to the subject matter of these Terms of Service shall be governed by the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the state and Federal courts of New York County, New York.

9. Miscellaneous.

a. Modification. We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to modify or replace any of these Terms of Service, or change, suspend, or discontinue the Services at any time. Your continued use of the Services following notification of any changes to these Terms of Service constitutes acceptance of those changes.

b. Entire Agreement and Severability. These Terms of Service are the entire agreement between you and us with respect to the Services, including use of the Site, and supersede all prior or contemporaneous communications and proposals (whether oral, written or electronic) between you and us with respect to the Services. If any provision of these Terms of Service is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that these Terms of Service will otherwise remain in full force and effect and enforceable. The failure of either party to exercise in any respect any right provided for herein shall not be deemed a waiver of any further rights hereunder

c. Force Majeure. We shall not be liable for any failure to perform our obligations hereunder where such failure results from any cause beyond our reasonable control, including, without limitation, mechanical, electronic or communications failure or degradation.

d. Assignment. These Terms of Service are personal to you, and are not assignable, transferable or sublicensable by you except with our prior written consent. We may assign, transfer or delegate any of our rights and obligations hereunder without consent.

e. Agency. No agency, partnership, joint venture, or employment relationship is created as a result of these Terms of Service and neither party has any authority of any kind to bind the other in any respect.

f. Notices. Unless otherwise specified in these Term of Service, all notices under these Terms of Service will be in writing and will be deemed to have been duly given when received, if personally delivered or sent by certified or registered mail, return receipt requested; when receipt is electronically confirmed, if transmitted by facsimile or e-mail; or the day after it is sent, if sent for next day delivery by recognized overnight delivery service. g. No Waiver. Our failure to enforce any part of these Terms of Service shall not constitute a waiver of our right to later enforce that or any other part of these Terms of Service. Waiver of compliance in any particular instance does not mean that we will waive compliance in the future. In order for any waiver of compliance with these Terms of Service to be binding, we must provide you with written notice of such waiver through one of our authorized representatives.

h. Headings. The section and paragraph headings in these Terms of Service are for convenience only and shall not affect their interpretation.
